I founded the Working Class Student Union at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2007 after encountering classism throughout my campus and feeling isolated based on a working-class identity. I considered dropping out of college my sophomore year. However, before making that decision, I decided to look for other working-class students that I could connect with to develop support, so I could finish school. With that, Wuxi was born. I felt that working-class students share a unique identity that had traditionally been silenced in higher education. By creating Wuxi, I sought to break that silence and the stigma. Wuxi became an organization for such students, an unprecedented resource on the UW-Madison campus as well as nationally. Over the three years I was Wuxi's president, and in the two years since graduating, numerous campuses nationally have asked me for advice and resources to create similar organizations. With this, I created the National Working Class Student Union to help create and support Wuxi chapters across the country and eventually abroad. After we launch, we will provide these chapters with brand materials, strategic planning, educational tools, and resources. The National Working Class Student Union, known as No Wuxi, together with its campus chapters, will use education to raise awareness about socio-economic issues in higher education and advocacy to empower and support working-class students. Additionally, it will develop and work toward national strategic goals for education and advocacy that the chapters can take to their local campuses.
